As much as I personally dislike the cold and this colder than usual winter it’s probably best to not complain too much. Mother Nature takes care of herself and sets fish patterns into motion providing multiple opportunities to target more species than other times of the year. This includes bonefish, permit and tarpon.
Winter time tarpon fishing has already kicked off with the shrimp runs beginning. Tarpon have amassed on the beaches, inlets and in Biscayne Bay. The cooler than usual weather this year will hopefully push more fish down into our area than in previous years. By this time of the year tarpon, bonefish and permit have acclimated to the lower water temperatures and aren’t influence by cold fronts as water temps have basically bottomed out.
The tarpon fishing in Fort Lauderdale has been pretty good when we can get out onto the beach or inlet. Miami has tarpon on the beach and inside Biscayne Bay. With the shrimps runs beginning things are about to really take off!
On a recent early morning trip Mark form NY wanted to see if the tarpon were biting. After finding a large school of tarpon he went 2 for 5 on them in just a couple hours.
On an evening trip with John and Michelle they found a school of large tarpon and wound up catching 1 of 3 hooked on artificial lures. John caught a fish in the 100 lb class.
